About Goodloe Law

Martha Lawson Goodloe was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.  She attended the University of Missouri, where she graduated with honors with a BA degree in History.  Thereafter she attended Washington and Lee University Law School in Lexington, Virginia where she earned her Juris Doctorate degree.  Ms. Goodloe has stayed current in the legal field, most recently participating in a week long estate planning class sponsored by the American Bar Association at New York Law School.

Ms. Goodloe’s experience covers a wide range of topics from helping to permit a restaurant with the U. S. Forest Service on Aspen Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, to being on the team litigating the proprietary rights between McDonald Douglas and Northrop Corporation to the F-18 military jet, to litigating ownership of original Andy Warhol paintings, to representing the U.S. Government in claims for fraud against multiple federal savings and loans.  Ms. Goodloe knows that drafting documents is more than an exercise in legally effective writing; it is also the experience to know whether the document will hold up in court.

Ms. Goodloe also has experience as a business owner; for a number of years she was president of GH Land Co., a real estate development and building company in Missoula, Montana.  Before being president, Ms. Goodloe worked as a construction laborer and a carpenters’ apprentice in order to learn how to build a house.  While being president, GH Land Co. built more than thirty houses, two subdivisions, and ten condominiums.  Ms. Goodloe understands cash flow and profit, and the importance of good communication between business partners while managing cash flow and profit.  She also knows the need for a well thought out succession plan or exit strategy so the company maintains value during those events.

Ms. Goodloe now limits her law practice to estate planning and business law.  She has drafted a seemingly countless number of Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney, Durable Powers of Attorney for Health Care, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Releases, and End of Life Directives.  She has also drafted a wide variety of trusts, including testamentary trusts, generation skipping trusts, revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, and trusts with charitable components.  She has handled intestacy matters, probate matters, guardianship cases, and minors’ guardian ad litem cases.  In the area of business law she has created corporations and limited liability partnerships and drafted operating agreements and partnership agreements.  Ms. Goodloe has also created a corporation to be the holding entity for a private water company, helped set up a commercial condominium, and written residential condominium declarations.
